Dimensional weight in China shipping reflects the space a package occupies, not only its physical weight. Carriers may compare volumetric weight with actual weight and charge using the higher figure. That makes packaging dimensions a commercial specification rather than a cosmetic afterthought.

DHL’s official calculator guidance explains volumetric weight as length multiplied by width and height, divided by a carrier divisor, with the higher of volumetric and actual weight used for pricing. The divisor and rounding rules vary by carrier, service, lane and contract, so verify the current quotation instead of applying one formula universally.

Collect carton data before choosing a freight method

Request unit dimensions, packed-unit dimensions, units per master carton, outer carton dimensions, gross weight and net weight. Optimize the product package first

Review empty space around the product, oversized inserts, unnecessary display volume and accessory placement.
