A category needs a specification

Source the scope—not just the appearance.

Home and living is broad: a storage organizer, textile item, tabletop accessory and decorative fixture do not share the same cost drivers or quality risks. A useful sourcing process therefore begins by narrowing the product into material, dimensions, construction, finish, packaging and intended use—not by sending a generic reference image to dozens of factories.

MICStore coordinates project-specific sourcing for overseas brands, Amazon and Shopify sellers, and wholesalers. We help turn the commercial idea into a supplier brief, compare quotations on the same scope, organize samples and define practical checkpoints before production and shipment. Industry reference imagery on this page is illustrative and does not represent a client project.

Quotation input

A useful product brief should define:

  • Exact dimensions and tolerance priorities
  • Material grade, finish, color and surface reference
  • Target order quantity and acceptable MOQ range
  • Packaging method, carton limits and retail presentation
  • Destination market and any food-contact or labeling needs
  • Reference sample, drawing or competitor benchmark

MOQ and commercial feasibility

Control complexity before negotiating quantity.

MOQ depends on the most restrictive process. A standard molded item may be available at a lower quantity, while a custom color, printed sleeve, fabric dye lot or new tool can raise the practical minimum. The useful question is not “Who has the lowest MOQ?” but “Which parts can remain standard while the customer-facing elements are customized?” We compare this trade-off before a sample program begins.

For a wider planning framework, read our MOQ guide for China sourcing and supplier quotation scorecard.

Development sequence

Move forward with controlled decisions.

01 · DEFINE

Product brief

Align specifications, quantity, customization, destination and commercial constraints.

02 · COMPARE

Supplier scope

Compare suppliers against the same materials, construction, packaging and assumptions.

03 · APPROVE

Sample standard

Record the approved version, corrections and checkpoints before production begins.

04 · CONTROL

Production & delivery

Coordinate quality evidence, packing data, inspection and shipment handoff.

Samples and quality checkpoints

An approved sample is a decision record.

For simple products, a supplier stock sample may first confirm construction and material quality. A customized pre-production sample should then lock dimensions, finish, color, logo position, packaging and any functional expectations. The approved reference should be documented with photographs, measurements and version notes so production is checked against one controlled standard.

  • Critical dimensions and assembly fit
  • Surface finish, color consistency and cosmetic defects
  • Material and odor checks where relevant
  • Basic function or load checks appropriate to the item
  • Logo, label, barcode and packaging accuracy
  • Carton strength, drop-risk points and quantity per carton

Supplier capability and the inspection scope should be reviewed before a deposit. See our supplier verification and quality inspection service.

Packaging, shipping and landed cost

The factory price is only one part of the product.

Bulky home products can look inexpensive at the unit level but become costly after cubic volume is considered. Carton dimensions, nesting, flat-pack design and product protection should be reviewed before the final quotation. Consolidation can help when a coordinated range uses several suppliers, but only when carton data and readiness dates are controlled.

Review the broader process in our shipping, consolidation and landed-cost guide.

Risk controls

What this sourcing process should avoid

  • Copying protected artwork, characters or branded designs
  • Accepting a quotation before material and dimensions are comparable
  • Approving only appearance while ignoring packaging protection
  • Using unverified food-contact or performance claims
  • Allowing multiple sample versions without a final approval record

Frequently asked questions

Before you send the product brief

Can small brands source home products from China?

Yes, when the project is narrowed to a feasible quantity and customization scope. Standard materials, existing molds and custom packaging often provide a more practical starting point than a fully new product.

What information is needed for a quotation?

Provide the product reference, dimensions, material, target quantity, logo or packaging needs, destination and target timeline. Unknown points should be listed openly so suppliers quote the same assumptions.

Can different home products be consolidated?

Potentially. Consolidation is practical when suppliers can deliver to one handoff point, carton data is available and inspection or readiness timing is coordinated before booking freight.

How should home-product quality be inspected?

The checklist should reflect actual customer risk: dimensions, finish, function, assembly, labeling, packaging and carton condition. It should be defined before production rather than improvised at shipment.

Do you source branded replicas?

No. Projects involving unauthorized logos, characters, packaging or replicas are outside the approved sourcing scope.

Turn the category into a sourcing plan.

Send the product reference, target quantity, customization, destination and timeline. We will review the smallest practical next step.
